Surgery for female infertility was very common in the US until the late 1990's. We used to perform laparoscopic evaluation of the pelvic area on the majority of women that were having trouble getting pregnant as long as her male partner had a reasonably normal semen analysis. However, as in vitro fertilization success rates improved dramatically in the 1990's, women with fertility problems and their fertility specialist doctors moved on to IVF sooner than in the past, and had/did less pelvic surgery for infertility. There is currently much less laparoscopic surgery being done for infertility. However, it is still appropriate in some cases, and some women will prefer surgery to IVF.
