Egg Vitrification Study at the Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago
IRB approved research study of egg freezing and then thawing, fertilizing and transferring back to the female partner.
- Vitrification is a process of using very rapid cooling to convert a material into a glass-like solid that is free from crystals.
- Some recent studies have shown that vitrification may avoid damage to the egg, as can occur with the older "slow freeze" method.
Egg-freezing is experimental - at this time, The American Society of Reproductive Medicine is saying that it should only be offered as part of an IRB approved research study.
- Our clinic was chosen to participate in an institutional review board (IRB) approved research study sponsored by Irvine Scientific. They are seeking FDA approval for their egg freezing system.
Some potential reasons for freezing eggs:
- Women undergoing treatments that may affect fertility
- Chemotherapy for cancer
- Radiation therapy
- Ovarian surgery
- Ethical or religious issues with creating or freezing excess embryos
- Women with "advancing age" wishing to put off childbearing in order to further their education or careers
- Women with "advancing age" who have not yet found a partner with whom they want to have a family
- "Social" egg freezing is a term used for when a woman chooses to freeze eggs to delay childbearing.
- As egg freezing technology advances, and success rates improve, some women pursue social egg freezing at a young age (early 30's, for example) for use later when they are ready to have children.
