Our Expert Team is Here for You

The financial side of fertility care can seem daunting, but the caring team at AFCC is here to assist, working closely with you every step of the way. We’ll help you:

  • Verify and maximize insurance benefits: We’ll work with you to fully understand your insurance coverage, maximize benefits, and avoid surprises along the way. If you have health insurance, there’s a 95% chance you have at least some fertility coverage.

  • Fertility Care Insurance Coverage Guidance: AFCC knows that the costs involved in family building can present an obstacle to many aspiring parents. To make fertility more accessible, we partner with several different financial lenders, each with customized plans to meet your unique needs.

No matter what route you take with fertility care, our team will aim to create as seamless and stress-free an experience as possible, so you can focus on what matters most: growing your family. Before beginning any treatments, all patients will meet with a financial counselor to map out all anticipated costs, and from that point forward, we’ll be by your side.

The costs outlined here apply to patients who do not have insurance coverage for fertility treatments. The team at AFCC will work with you to identify possible coverage and alternative financing options that meet your needs.

What Affects the Cost of Fertility Treatment?

The cost of fertility care can vary considerably based on several different factors. The expert team at AFCC will guide you, helping you navigate all variables and intricacies so you can feel comfortable and confident about what’s ahead. Some of the key factors that can impact overall fertility treatment costs include:

  • Type of treatment: Whether you’re pursuing IVF, IUI, egg freezing, or embryo transfer, the specifics of your treatment plan will help determine how much you pay. Simpler procedures like IUI will be less expensive than more involved procedures like IVF.

  • Number of cycles recommended: Many women undergoing fertility treatments require more than one cycle of IVF or egg freezing to reach their goals. Because each cycle requires payment, costs can increase over time if patients pursue more than a single cycle.

  • Fertility medications: Medications to stimulate the ovaries and egg production, strengthen the uterine lining, or finalize egg maturation may all be used during the course of your fertility treatment. The type, quantity, and duration of medications can all impact total expenditures.

  • Use of donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier: Some people work with donor eggs, donor sperm, or a gestational carrier to help them fulfill their goals of parenthood. These setups will increase the cost of your fertility treatment.

  • Lab services and add-ons: Lab services such as preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), monogenic gene defects (PGT-M), or structural rearrangements (PGT-SR); cryopreservation of eggs or embryos; ovarian reserve testing; and more can contribute to overall costs.

  • Insurance coverage vs. out-of-pocket status: Your insurance coverage and benefits will have a great impact on how much you end up paying. Some plans may cover the majority of services and treatments you pursue, while others may only cover a small percentage. If you’re paying out of pocket without insurance, costs will inevitably be higher.

Fertility Treatment Cost FAQs

  • Insurance coverage for IVF can vary widely depending on the specifics of your plan. In Chicago and throughout Illinois, most residents with health insurance have at least some coverage for IVF due to the statewide fertility insurance mandate requiring coverage for infertility diagnosis and treatment. Note that employers with fewer than 25 employees, religious employers, and employers that are self-insured are exempt from this mandate.

Some plans and benefits may cover all or most of the IVF process, while others may cover a minimal amount or none. Be sure to carefully review your coverage and get in touch with an insurance rep to clarify any questions you may have. If you have insurance through your employer, your benefits coordinator should be able to help as well.

No matter your specific situation, the team at AFCC has financial coordinators on hand to help you confirm your coverage and take advantage of your benefits. If you’ll be paying out of pocket, we can guide you to the right financing plan.

  • As with IVF, egg freezing coverage will depend on the specifics of your coverage. Fortunately, egg freezing also falls under the statewide Illinois fertility insurance mandate (but again, keep in mind that religious employers, employers with fewer than 25 employees, and self-insured employers are exempt).

Elective egg freezing — in other words, freezing eggs to give yourself options for future family planning, rather than out of medical necessity — may not be covered, even under the mandate. If you have a medical condition such as cancer or a genetic condition that requires IVF with PGT to avoid passing on to offspring, you will likely have some, if not full, coverage.

Be sure to clarify all coverage and benefits details with your insurance company and, if applicable, your employer’s benefits coordinator.

  • To determine whether you have fertility insurance coverage, first look into the details of your specific plan. If you’re unclear on anything, a rep from your insurance provider should be able to answer questions. If you have insurance through your employer, the benefits coordinator should be able to help as well.

If you live in Chicago or elsewhere in Illinois, your coverage may adhere to the statewide fertility insurance mandate. Be sure to check for exemptions; many employers, for example, are self-insured and therefore exempt.

  • Yes, you can use a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) for fertility treatment costs and related expenses. These accounts could be used to pay for IVF, egg freezing, IUI, FET, and PGT, as well as associated costs for medications, procedures, and testing. However, the rules for HSA and FSA funds can vary, so check with your plan to confirm what they can be used for. For example, long-term egg or embryo storage may not be eligible.

  • The cost of IVF typically includes:

    • Initial consultations and diagnostic testing: Initial appointments and tests will assess your fertility health and determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs and goals.

    • Egg retrieval: During this quick outpatient procedure, eggs are collected for testing, fertilization, and/or storage.

    • Fertilization: Fertilization involves combining eggs with a partner’s sperm or donor sperm in a laboratory dish in the hopes of achieving pregnancy.

Embryo culture and monitoring: During this process, embryos are grown in a specialized incubator before transfer to the uterus and monitored for healthy development.

  • If you’re using donor eggs or sperm, the cost of IVF or IUI may increase. The cost of donor sperm or eggs is usually not included in base pricing and must be factored in. Because the donation process can be involved — entailing a comprehensive screening process, legal agreements, and medical procedures for the donors — it can add significantly to overall costs.

The team at AFCC is proud to operate an industry-leading egg donation program and will work closely with you to go over all anticipated expenses. Whether you’re a single hopeful parent, have medical circumstances that prevent you from using your own eggs, or are an LGBTQ+ couple, we’ll help you navigate every step of the process.

  • Yes, AFCC makes several different payment plans and financing options available to help patients manage the costs of IVF, IUI, egg freezing, and more. We work with a few trusted third-partners that provide a variety of fertility financing and IVF loan programs to meet a range of needs and circumstances. Our team will help you review your options and choose what’s best for you.

  • Medications — such as those used to stimulate the ovaries in order to increase egg production — are usually not included in the cost of treatments such as IVF or IUI. These expenses will be added to your total. AFCC will make sure you’re clear on all costs at the outset of the process to avoid any surprises.

  • Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) may add to your total cost of treatment. During PGT, embryos are screened for genetic abnormalities before transfer to the uterus. This may be done to test for aneuploidy (PGT-A), monogenic gene defects (PGT-M), or structural rearrangements (PGT-SR). The type of PGT, the reason it’s being done, the number of embryos being tested, and the number of genetic mutations being screened for can all impact cost. We’ll help you navigate these expenditures and any others that may be involved with your treatment.

  • Gestational surrogacy is usually not covered by insurance. With gestational surrogacy, a surrogate carries and births the baby for intended parents (the surrogate does not use her own eggs and therefore will not be related to the baby). Same-sex male couples, single men, and women who cannot carry or birth a child on their own may choose to work with surrogates.

Surrogacy is a complex multi-step process involving surrogate screenings, legal processes, and more. Our team will walk you through all expected surrogacy costs and help you navigate this unique journey.
